As far back as the 1970’s I was fascinated by the idea of graphology and how handwriting could tell you about a person’s personality. How would that work? Many people now know about forensic graphology and forged signature identification, but I digress – fast forward to 1995 when I had the opportunity to study the subject with one of the leading graphologists in the UK. My decision was made very quickly.
I attended every Tuesday evening for one-to-one coaching initially whilst I learnt the basics of graphology. Learning about why we dot the i’s and cross the t’s, what it means for analysis. Why a signature that is written differently from the body of text means that someone wears a face to deal with their world. Why a straight baseline can mean two different things and how extra-large writing can mean that someone needs the Royal Albert Hall to truly portray who they are: the stage and performance. I couldn’t get enough of graphology so ended up going with my teacher to her speaking engagements and events. Every event I learnt something new such as how certain pen grips and posture can change the way you think and act. There were many light-bulb moments during those days.
Having had some experience teaching through our group class I got the teaching bug, and it wasn’t long before I was teaching graphology at adult education colleges, universities, and running workshops all over the country. Having qualified as an adult education teacher first.
It was amazing, watching my students have those lightbulb moments as the analysis training suddenly clicked with them. They too could see how people reacted in social situations, the influence of the parents on them and what dormant skills were lying hidden. But, there was more to learn so I attained counselling skills and became a life and business coach to help my personal development clients more easily.
I carried out a medically approved research project at Poole Hospital and working with the cardiac consultants we were able to statistically prove that heart disease could be seen in handwriting. This was confirmed by a second analysis carried out by a different graphologist. As a result of this research, I was invited to Australia to disseminate my research paper and I started to be invited to be keynote speaker at conferences and events here and abroad. Attending book signing, literary festivals, exhibitions, conferences offering one-to-one handwriting analysis and workshops.
More recently I have set up one-to-one graphology training. With 14 hours of training one student was able to put together a basic analytical report on a person’s handwriting with great success. After about 20 hours of training, she analysed the writing of a well-known graphologist and was told that she was 100% correct with nothing to add and nothing to delete. We are still working together. Her more recent lightbulb moment came when she understood how to identify early learning experiences and how that affects adult years. People are multi-faceted, graphology can help you to understand behaviour but also the why.
